Did you know that in many countries there are national and local associations promoting car-free living?!
In Hamburg for instance, the Verein autofreies Wohnen in der Stadt gathers together households that want to live without cars and negotiaties with the city on car-free quarters to be built for people who don't want to have cars around their house. Three quarters have been built already and a fourth is presently in the planning stage. http://autofreieswohnen.de/
autofrei leben! e.V. is a German-wide initiative of car-free people and their local initiatives. www.autofrei.de
CAS (Club der Autofreien der Schweiz) is the Swiss organisation. www.clubderautofreien.ch
And finally, there is also the World Carfree Network :-) www.worldcarfree.net/

Its very inspiring to see what initiatives are popping up all over the continent. However, I live in the UK and it seems these developments are much slower here and with much more resistance. Even car/lift sharing is considered to be very problematic and even dangerous!
The only project I could find in this direction is the Carfree UK site http://www.carfree.org.uk/ which is hardly known and almost inactive. I would be very interested to hear from anyone about further, more developed campaigns, promotions or groups in the UK around carfree towns, functioning lift share schemes. Does anyone know of some good ones?
A weekly Idea Card Diary shows flashes from the future when these new services and products will be mainstream all over Europe. Or will they? Read more and comment!
